Most notable are the vocals, which Friends - Reilly & Maloney - At Last very over-the-top and an exaggerated black metal rasp that sometimes comes off as a tad comedic that hurts the seriousness this album is trying to convey.
The music itself is actually pretty interesting. It has a dark, almost werewolf type of sound to it - definitely not your typical Austrian black metal guitar work. The drums are well represented in the mix, and while they are sloppy at times, I don't think that is something that Ascending Of The Empire - Trifixion - The First And The Last Commandment really be frowned upon given the raw nature of this record.
The occasional keyboard is present although not overbearing and it helps add to the atmosphere of the album. I researched this CD a lot before buying it and quickly realized that just about everyone who heard this album strongly disliked it. I Endless Road (Is This Future) - Chin-Chat - Introducing it anyway because I collect Lethal Records albums, but I can easily see why people do not like this and I would probably not recommend this to anyone because it is not a necessary album nor is it an album that would provide repeat listens to most people.
It is a unique and very odd album that you should definitely try to hear before you buy. From the stories I've heard, Trifixion of the Horned God Ascending Of The Empire - Trifixion - The First And The Last Commandment a big wanker, who screwed other bands in his attempts to get commercial success. This kinda sets the tone for his own band, which he formed after being kicked out of Summoning by Silenius and Protector.
While it's true Summoning was a group of amateur teens trying to emulate their Norwegian heroes at the time of their demos and Lugburz, they did manage to make a brilliant album, with a unique atmosphere, their own unique input and tangent. This time, sans Tolkien atmosphere, and sans brilliant fellow Summoning members.
Of course, being a big fan of all eras of Summoning I was curious to this project 'of one of Summoning's ex-members'. I finally located it in a very specialised cd-store, listened to it and bought it. Why on earth? After all, most of the tracks feel slightly amateurish in their design. You can hear Trifixion tried hard to be 'evil' and especially 'true'. And subsequently, he failed of course. The opening 'growls' of Let The Feast Begin, where he moans and groans as if he's becoming a werewolf, are particularly laughable.
And it's ironic that where he does all the instruments besides the guitar, the guitar is the most interesting instrument on this album. Well I bought it because it reminds me of one of my favorite bm-albums of all time: Summoning's Lugburz. In a couple of tracks, the guitar-sound aproximates that meaty and 'orky' sound the guitars on Lugburz have, with their catchy melodies.
Of course, it's not quite as catchy here, but there are a few moments where Trifixion's chinese girlfriend on the guitar shines, in my opinion. And occasionally, I must admit, the synths do make a nice atmosphere, and they're relatively subtle compared to other bands experimenting with synths starting in that period. Hence I give this mediocre album a 68 still, in spite of Trifixion himself being a total wanker.
